Synthetic, semi-synthetic and specialized formulations should be selected according to the application rather than assuming one product is automatically best for every engine.

Start with the viscosity grade and specification required by the vehicle or engine builder. Look for applicable API, ACEA or manufacturer approvals where they are specified for the engine. Consider climate and operating temperature, but do not change viscosity solely because the vehicle is modified without understanding the lubrication requirements. High-output engines may also benefit from shorter service intervals depending on use and oil analysis. When changing oil, use the correct filter and fill quantity and check the final level according to the manufacturer procedure. For track or heavily modified applications, follow the engine builder or tuner recommendations.
