Catback Exhausts in Canada: Maximize Sound and Flow Without Breaking the Bank

Cat-Back Exhausts in Canada: Cat-Back vs Axle-Back vs Headers

A cat-back exhaust in Canada is the section from the catalytic converter back: mid-pipe, muffler, and tips. The factory converter stays. That is a different job than an axle-back (muffler and tips behind the rear axle) and a different job than headers (the manifolds in front of the converter).

Too Fast Auto Parts sells all three, priced in CAD. Start in cat-back exhausts, headers, or the broader performance exhaust catalog if you are still comparing.

Cat-back, axle-back, or headers?

If you want more sound and a little more flow on a street car that still needs the cat, you want a cat-back. If you mainly want tips and a milder note, an axle-back is enough and usually a smaller install. If the log manifolds are the restriction — a 350Z, a KA 240SX, a swap — you are looking at headers, and often a tune.

System What comes off the car Why people buy it Where to shop
Axle-back Muffler, tailpipe, tips behind the axle Sound and appearance, simpler install Performance exhaust
Cat-back Everything from the converter back Sound plus flow, cat stays Cat-back exhausts
Headers Manifolds / primary tubes before the cat Real flow on NA or swap engines Headers

Read the product title. The Invidia 22+ WRX Q300 is an axle-back for the WRX, not a Golf R cat-back. Full header-back systems (headers through the tips) live in header-back exhausts — only if you are replacing the manifolds as well.

On a stock engine, a cat-back changes how the car sounds and how it breathes at high RPM. Horsepower claims are usually modest. Bigger numbers show up when headers, a high-flow cat or downpipe, and a tune are part of the same build.

Invidia R400 cat-back for the 2022+ Golf R MK8

One system we have sold for this layout is the Invidia 76 mm R400 valved cat-back for the 2022+ Volkswagen Golf R MK8, straight-cut black tips. It is built for the MK8 Golf R, not the GTI and not the older Golf R. The rolled titanium-tip MK8 R400 is a different listing if that is the look you want.

The valves open for a louder, higher-flow note and close for a calmer street tone. Ask us if you also need a controller or harness rather than assuming it is in the crate. On a stock MK8 that still has the factory converter, this is the usual bolt-on cat-back. If the car already has a downpipe or a tune, tell us how the rest of the exhaust is laid out before you order.

We price it in CAD and ship across Canada. Install is not in the crate price — book North York if you want it fitted here, or send the freight to a local exhaust shop. Confirm crate shipping before you plan a weekend install.

If you are not in a Golf R, the same catalog has other cat-backs, including the Borla 22–24 Civic Sport S-Type and ISR GT singles for G35/G37. Those are different cars. Do not order a Civic system for a Golf R because it sat next to it on the page.

When headers make sense

Headers replace the factory manifolds. They sit in front of a cat-back. On a street car that must keep emissions equipment, they still have to mate to a converter or a catted Y-pipe. They are not a muffler.

A long-tube we list for the VQ platform is the ISR HGC long-tube for VQ35DE/HR 350Z / 370Z and Infiniti G35. Related ISR headers:

Long-tubes usually need more clearance, often a Y-pipe change, and a tune. Shorties are closer to a manifold swap. LS-swap ISR headers are a different engine — a 240SX LS header will not service a KA24DE.

The full list is in aftermarket exhaust headers and on the ISR Performance page. PLM long-tubes show up in the same catalog. Match engine code before brand.

A cat-back will not fix stock manifolds, and headers into a tired factory cat-back waste the primary-tube work. If you are doing both, buy two products for the same engine and chassis. A Golf R cat-back does not bolt to a VQ long-tube.

Street use, drone, and tunes in Canada

Keeping the catalytic converter is the usual street path. Noise and emissions rules are provincial and municipal. Too Fast can tell you whether a listing is a cat-back, an axle-back, or headers. We cannot stamp it for your city’s bylaw officer.

Most bolt-on cat-backs on an otherwise-stock engine do not need a tune. Headers, high-flow cats, downpipes, and stacked intake-plus-exhaust builds do. If the Golf R already has a downpipe, say so before you add the R400.

Drone is that low boom in the cabin at cruise. Valved systems like the MK8 R400 let you close the valves for the highway. Race pipes and muffler-deletes do not. If the car is a commute, tell us — we would rather sell you a street system than a track pipe you regret on the 401.

A cat-back is often gaskets, hangers, and tip alignment on a lift. Headers usually mean manifold studs, heat management, and sometimes new cats. North York can quote eligible jobs; oversized crates still ship across the country.

Fit the car you have

Fitment is year, engine, drivetrain, and body on the product page. Systems we list today include the MK8 Golf R Invidia R400, the Civic Sport Borla cat-back, Nissan 350Z/370Z and Infiniti G35 ISR pieces, and the 240SX KA 4-2-1. If your car is not one of those, filter the cat-back or header collection rather than borrowing a part from a neighbour’s build.

A Saturday cat-back install usually means a lift or solid jack stands, new gaskets, and patience with hangers that have seen a decade of Canadian salt. Soak the factory hardware the night before if you are doing it at home. Stainless tips still need to be clocked in the bumper cut-out; bolt-on does not mean ignore alignment. Headers are a longer day: manifold studs that snap, heat shields that fight you, and a smoke check for leaks before the first highway run.

If you are stacking a cat-back with an intake and you already have a downpipe, say the whole list when you call. We would rather tell you the R400 is the wrong next part than ship a crate that does not mate. ISR long-tubes on a 350Z are strong hardware, but they only fit the engine and chassis on the title.

Shop cat-back exhausts and headers

Cat-back exhausts for the street systems. If you have a 2022+ Golf R MK8, open the Invidia R400 valved cat-back, black tips.

Headers: exhaust headers and the ISR HGC long-tube for 350Z/G35.

Mufflers, axle-backs, and hardware sit in performance exhaust systems.

Common questions

Is the Invidia Golf R system a cat-back or an axle-back?

It is a 76 mm valved cat-back for the 2022+ Golf R MK8. The WRX Q300 linked above is an axle-back. Trust the title.

Do I need headers if I already bought a cat-back?

No. A cat-back is a complete street upgrade on its own. Add headers when the manifolds are the bottleneck and you are ready for extra fitment work, and usually a tune.

Can you install the Golf R cat-back in North York?

We can quote eligible exhaust jobs at 4699 Keele St. Book labour separately. Bring the MK8 Golf R, not a GTI.

Will ISR long-tubes bolt to a stock 350Z cat-back?

Sometimes with the right Y-pipe and clearance, often not as a blind swap. Start on the long-tube product page and tell us DE versus HR.
